Project 1: Reading the Context of Traditional Streets

In this project, we are required to study one of the selected traditional streets in our country. The distinct place context is identified based on different physical and non-physical aspects. Our study is recorded using the form of a sketching journey with aid of different reading materials. At the end of the project, a summary of observation and the relationship between architecture and its social, cultural, and intellectual context within the Asian region should be expressed.

Reflection:

I chose Jalan Sultan as my research topic. I personally found this a very enjoyable project, every traditional building has an irreplaceable historic scheme, it is also a symbol of cultural identity that I am proud of. Unfortunately, some buildings can either be only found on books or abandoned because they lost their original functions in this globalized city. However, there are also some buildings being adaptive reuse as cafes or hotels and are well maintained. I learned how important the well preserved buildings in a traditional street are. They have high historical value to our community as well as give the sense of wonder and to know more about the people, culture, architecture, historical, social and even political.
